The famous Hollywood sign overlooking Tinseltown was briefly reading “Hollyboob” on Monday. And now (we might) know why.
Julia Rose says she changed the banner in protest of what she considers censorship of intolerant content by Instagram. Police arrested Rose and five others for trespassing, and park rangers quickly restored the iconic sign to its usual status.
“It was a not-so-great way (not to mention the terrain is steep and dangerous),” said Captain Steve Lowry, Hollywood District Officer in Charge of the Los Angeles Police Department, He tweeted on Monday.
Rose is the founder and CEO of Shag Mag, a digital publication that offers “exclusive and uncensored content to Julia Rose and other rising Instagram models” (yes, there are a lot of boobs). at Interview with the Los Angeles Times On Tuesday, Rose said she first came up with the idea of Hollyboob last year after Instagram warned her about nudity on her personal and company accounts. The accounts combined had around 6 million followers before they were disabled, the newspaper reported.
Rose told the newspaper that she knows she is “pushing the boundaries of censorship” on accounts by highlighting other influencers who are slimly dressed, but she believes Instagram and its parent company, Facebook, are targeting influencers more aggressively than well-known brands like Playboy.
“We do not allow nudity on Instagram, and we have removed these accounts for repeatedly breaking these rules,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.
Rose and fellow influencer Jack Tiny, one of her prank partners, assert that the trick has unexpected benefits, such as raising awareness of breast cancer and making people smile.
“He’s cool,” Rose told the Los Angeles Times. “All together it was really cool.”
The Hollywood sign was built in 1923 as a giant illuminated advertisement for an upscale real estate development called Hollywood Land and quickly became a tourist attraction and symbol of Hollywood glamor. She has appeared in several movies, including Argo, Sharknado, and San Andreas, and in video games including Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. The letter W on the banner, which is the longest in the current version, is 45 feet tall and approximately 40 inches wide.
Reaching the landmark on top of Mt. It required me to climb steep terrain, but intruders were able to change it before. In 2017, an artist changed it to read “Hollyweed,” and in 1987, it briefly became “Hollywood” to coincide with a visit from the Pope.
Rose made news during the 2019 World Championships, when she and some of her friends moved their chest with TV cameras from the seats behind the home board. At the time, they also said that they were raising awareness of breast cancer.
Rose and Tiny face court over their kidnapping in Hollywood later this year.
